Today is World Mental Health Day! This years focus is on suicide prevention. It is often considered a taboo topic, but it is an epidemic in Australia.
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44. The most recent Australian data (ABS, Causes of Death, 2017) reports deaths due to suicide in 2017 at 3,128... that's almost 9 people per day!
Whilst Male suicide rates occur at a rate 3 times higher than Females, women are more likely to suffer from mental disorders, and neither suicide or mental health is gender specific.
So we want to start a conversation about it... with EVERYONE! We want Canberran's to know that it's 'okay to not be okay', and its certainly 'not weak to speak'.
Please, please speak to someone. Family, friends, your GP, Lifeline Canberra, Soldier On Australia, Beyond Blue. Access your workplace Employee Assistance Program. There are options, and people that want you to speak to them, and if you are not up for speaking about it, try some of these other strategies...
Use humour to reframe your thoughts/feelings
Do something to help another person
Spend time with a pet
Accept sad feelings ('this will pass too')
Achieve something (big or small)
Hang out with people who are positive
Distraction with fun activities...
Most importantly, if someone you know or love wants to talk to you about their mental health, please listen.
