Common questions

How much does a first aid course cost in Canberra?

Public courses at our purpose-built Fyshwick training facility are $105 per person for CPR (HLTAID009), $199 for Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) and $220 for childcare first aid (HLTAID012). Nationally recognised first aid courses are GST-free. If your workplace needs a group trained together, private training is priced per group rather than per person, and it is often more cost-effective than booking several public seats, particularly once you have more than four or five people. Use our estimator for an instant private group quote, or contact us and we will put together a quote based on your team size, course type and whether you would like us to come to your workplace or host your private group at our Fyshwick facility.

How long does a first aid course take?

Our courses generally combine online learning you do at your own pace with a face-to-face session at Fyshwick or your workplace: about 1.5 hours for CPR, 3 hours for Provide First Aid and 3.5 hours for childcare first aid. If your team would rather do everything in the room, any of our courses can run as a full face-to-face session for private groups.

Can I do a first aid course online?

Part of it, yes. Generally the bulk of the theory is online, and you work through it at your own pace before your session. The practical part must be face to face: CPR on a manikin, bandaging and using a defibrillator are physical skills that cannot be adequately assessed online. Because of that, a fully online course cannot lead to a nationally recognised statement of attainment for most first aid courses. Our face-to-face sessions run at our Fyshwick training facility or at your workplace, delivered by current and former emergency service professionals who walk you through each skill until you can perform it. If your team would rather complete everything in one sitting, we can also run a full face-to-face day for private groups.

What is the difference between HLTAID009, HLTAID010, HLTAID011 and HLTAID012?

The codes are the national names for different levels of first aid training, and they build on each other.

HLTAID009 is the CPR course. It covers casualty assessment (DRSABCD), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This is the course commonly called the “CPR refresher”, recommended every 12 months between your three-yearly Provide First Aid course.

HLTAID010 is basic emergency life support. You will rarely need to think about it: it sits within HLTAID011, Provide First Aid, rather than running on its own.

HLTAID011 is Provide First Aid, the standard workplace first aid certificate, and it includes the CPR course, so completing it keeps your CPR current too. If an employer asks for “senior first aid” or “apply first aid”, this is the modern name for the same thing. Importantly, when you successfully complete HLTAID011 you attain three units: HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid itself.

HLTAID012 is childcare-specific first aid, for educators and education and care services. It includes everything in the full first aid course, adds child-specific first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis, and meets the requirements set out by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

If you need help figuring out which units you need, contact us and we will be happy to help.

How do I renew my first aid certificate?

To renew your Provide First Aid certificate, book the same course again, which is currently HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. If it has been a few years, you may know it by its older names: HLTAID011 replaced HLTAID003 Provide First Aid in 2020, and before that the course was widely known as Apply First Aid or Senior First Aid. Whatever your certificate says, HLTAID011 is today’s version of it.

If your Provide First Aid is not due yet, the recommendation is to complete the CPR course (HLTAID009) every 12 months in between. Many people know this as the CPR refresher. Your workplace or organisation may require a different renewal cycle, so check your own policy; most workplaces follow the Safe Work Australia First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, which recommends refreshing CPR every 12 months and first aid qualifications every three years, and early childhood services work to the same cycle.

Not sure when you last trained? If you trained with ACTWELL, log in to Training Desk to see your certificates. If you trained elsewhere or are not sure, you can view your USI VET transcript, which lists your nationally recognised training since 2015, by logging in to your USI account; recently completed courses can take a few months to appear there, so your training provider’s records are always the most current. And if you are still not sure, give us a call and we will help you locate your certificates.

Which first aid course do childcare workers need?

HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. It covers everything in HLTAID011 plus child-specific first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis management. See our childcare first aid course.

Can you train us at our workplace?

Yes. Private group training runs at your site or our Fyshwick facility, with base rates covering up to 10 people. See private onsite training.

What should I bring and what happens on the day?

Wear comfortable clothes you can kneel in; all floor work, including CPR practice, happens on our cushioned martial arts mats. Bring photo ID and have your online pre-course learning finished before you arrive. The session is hands-on: our experienced trainers walk you through each practical component and give you practise time before you complete the assessment. If you need additional help or support, we will always assist you in any way we can.

Renewal cycle

First Aid & CPR Renewal Cycle

CPR (HLTAID009) must be renewed annually. First Aid (HLTAID011) is renewed every 3 years, with a CPR update each year in between.
When should I renew
  • INITIAL

    HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

You complete your Provide First Aid course. This includes HLTAID009 (CPR) and HLTAID010 (Basic Emergency Life Support) — so all three qualifications are current from this single course.

  • YEAR 1

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Your CPR qualification is recommended for annual refresh. Since your First Aid (HLTAID011) is still current at this point in the example, you only need to book the shorter CPR course this year.

  • YEAR 2

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Year two — another CPR refresh. Your First Aid is still valid for one more year, so CPR-only is all you need again.

  • YEAR 3

    Thinking of booking early?

In this example, your First Aid renewal is just two months away. If you book CPR now as a standalone, your first aid will lapse in a matter of weeks. We recommend booking the full HLTAID011 instead — it includes CPR, so you’ll update both qualifications in one session and avoid a renewal blunder.
