Manual handling training based on your team’s actual tasks | Canberra, ACT

Often searched for as manual handling training, HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely covers the broader risks involved in lifting, carrying, moving, pushing, pulling and other hazardous manual tasks. When manual tasks are poorly planned or performed, they are a leading cause of workplace injury. This nationally recognised course gives your team the skills to identify hazardous manual tasks and complete them safely.

Overview

Manual task injuries remain one of the leading causes of workers’ compensation claims in Australia. Most of them are preventable. But prevention does not come from a two-hour lecture about correct lifting posture. It comes from workers understanding the specific risks in their own tasks and knowing how to manage them.

HLTWHS005 is a nationally recognised course that gives your team the skills and knowledge to identify hazardous manual tasks and complete them safely. ACTWELL delivers it with a focus on the tasks your people actually perform, not a generic slide deck about warehouse work.

This course is delivered for private groups only. ACTWELL will come to your site or host your team at our Fyshwick training facility.

What is included

On successful completion, you will receive the following nationally recognised qualification:

  • HLTWHS005Conduct Manual Tasks Safely

Who this course is for

  • Workers who perform lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or repetitive tasks
  • Supervisors and team leaders responsible for task planning and safety
  • Any workplace where manual handling forms part of normal operations

Manual handling training for aged care

Aged care teams handle some of the highest manual-task loads of any industry: supporting people to move, transfers, repositioning and equipment use, often under time pressure. We build the session around the tasks your carers actually perform, using your equipment and your environments, so the techniques stick on shift, not just in the classroom.

Manual handling training for healthcare

For clinics, hospitals and allied health, the session covers patient-handling scenarios, equipment-assisted transfers and the repetitive tasks that build injury risk over time. Trainers with real clinical and emergency service backgrounds keep it practical and specific to your setting.

What you will learn

You will learn how to recognise hazardous manual tasks and reduce the risk of injury by applying safe systems of work. This includes how to:

  • Spot the manual tasks that carry risk, for you and the people around you
  • Recognise what makes a task hazardous: repetition, force, awkward posture, vibration, and how the work is organised
  • Assess how serious the risk is and what needs to change
  • Apply practical controls to eliminate or reduce the risk before the task begins
  • Set up your workspace, task layout and workflow so the job can be done safely
  • Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly
  • Use safe posture and handling techniques to reduce strain and muscle load
  • Use mechanical aids and handling equipment properly, not just available but correctly
  • Pace and schedule tasks to minimise fatigue and overexertion
  • Recognise and report symptoms of injury or near misses

How you will be assessed

Assessment requires participants to:

  • Prepare for and safely complete at least three different manual tasks relevant to their role
  • Apply legally compliant workplace procedures during task preparation and completion
  • Use correct posture, techniques and equipment
  • Contribute to consultation aimed at improving manual handling safety
  • Identify hazards, assess risks and apply appropriate control measures

Entry requirements

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform basic manual handling tasks using correct posture and technique.

Renewal cycle

When should I renew?

This is an example renewal cycle starting from your most recent Provide First Aid course. Your specific dates will depend on when you completed each qualification. Check your certificate for your actual renewal dates.
  • INITIAL

    HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

You complete your Provide First Aid course. This includes HLTAID009 (CPR) and HLTAID010 (Basic Emergency Life Support) — so all three qualifications are current from this single course.

  • YEAR 1

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Your CPR qualification is recommended for annual refresh. Since your First Aid (HLTAID011) is still current at this point in the example, you only need to book the shorter CPR course this year.

  • YEAR 2

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Year two — another CPR refresh. Your First Aid is still valid for one more year, so CPR-only is all you need again.

  • YEAR 3

    Thinking of booking early?

In this example, your First Aid renewal is just two months away. If you book CPR now as a standalone, your first aid will lapse in a matter of weeks. We recommend booking the full HLTAID011 instead — it includes CPR, so you’ll update both qualifications in one session and avoid a renewal blunder.
