Lead your site’s first aid capability, Canberra ACT

Overview

The occupational first aid skill set is a comprehensive set of units that prepares you for a broader role within your workplace.

Occupational first aiders do not only respond to emergencies. They help plan, resource and manage the first aid capability across a site. That includes risk assessments, first aid equipment audits, incident coordination, and the clinical skills to manage more complex casualties.

If your workplace requires a designated occupational first aider, this is the qualification you need that provides the context and skills to perform that role.

ACTWELL delivers this course with emergency service professionals who understand both the clinical demands and the site management responsibilities this qualification covers.

What is included

On successful completion, you will receive the following nationally recognised qualifications:

Who this course is for

  • People employed in, or intending to become employed in, nominated occupational first aider roles
  • Designated workplace first aid officers in larger or higher-risk workplaces
  • Workers required to establish, maintain and coordinate first aid services for their site
  • Emergency response team members with first aid management responsibilities
  • Team leaders or supervisors responsible for first aid planning, resources and compliance

What you will learn

This course goes beyond immediate emergency response and prepares you to support both the casualty and the broader workplace first aid system.

You will learn how to:

  • Provide advanced first aid and resuscitation, including oxygen therapy and airway management
  • Assess and respond to casualties with multiple injuries or illnesses simultaneously
  • Manage multi-casualty incidents including prioritisation of treatment
  • Monitor and care for a casualty following initial treatment while awaiting emergency services
  • Coordinate with emergency services and provide detailed clinical handover
  • Develop and review your site’s first aid action plan and workplace risk assessments
  • Keep first aid resources stocked, maintained and ready
  • Debrief after incidents and use what you learn to improve how your site responds next time
  • Lead and support other first aiders at an incident scene

This course also covers all standard first aid competencies, including CPR, AED use, and management of a wide range of injuries and emergencies.

How you will be assessed

To complete this course, you will need to:

  • Perform CPR on an adult manikin on the floor, a child manikin and infant manikin on a firm surface for 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR each, being 5 full cycles
  • Use an AED and adrenaline auto-injector trainer
  • Demonstrate handling of regurgitation or vomiting during CPR
  • Assess and treat a simulated casualty without being told their condition in advance
  • Apply correct first aid to a wide range of simulated injuries, including advanced and multi-casualty scenarios
  • Accurately complete an incident report form

Assessment conditions

You will train in a realistic, scenario-based environment using:

  • CPR manikins, adult, child and infant

Renewal cycle

When should I renew?

This is an example renewal cycle starting from your most recent Provide First Aid course. Your specific dates will depend on when you completed each qualification. Check your certificate for your actual renewal dates.
  • INITIAL

    HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

You complete your Provide First Aid course. This includes HLTAID009 (CPR) and HLTAID010 (Basic Emergency Life Support) — so all three qualifications are current from this single course.

  • YEAR 1

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Your CPR qualification is recommended for annual refresh. Since your First Aid (HLTAID011) is still current at this point in the example, you only need to book the shorter CPR course this year.

  • YEAR 2

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Year two — another CPR refresh. Your First Aid is still valid for one more year, so CPR-only is all you need again.

  • YEAR 3

    Thinking of booking early?

In this example, your First Aid renewal is just two months away. If you book CPR now as a standalone, your first aid will lapse in a matter of weeks. We recommend booking the full HLTAID011 instead — it includes CPR, so you’ll update both qualifications in one session and avoid a renewal blunder.

  • YEAR 1

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Your CPR qualification is recommended for annual refresh. Since your First Aid (HLTAID012) is still current at this point in the example, you only need to book the shorter CPR course this year.

  • YEAR 2

    HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Year two — another CPR refresh. Your First Aid is still valid for one more year, so CPR-only is all you need again.

Common Questions

Before you book

What qualifications do I get from the Occupational First Aid Skill Set?

You are awarded the HLTSS00068 skill set plus the units inside it: HLTAID009, HLTAID010, HLTAID011, HLTAID014, HLTAID015 and HLTAID016. It is the most complete first aid qualification ACTWELL offers, delivered across 8.5 hours face-to-face plus up to 9 hours of online pre-course learning, for $595 per person. Sessions run at ACTWELL’s Fyshwick training facility, or full face-to-face delivery can be arranged for private groups on request.

Is this the same as HLTAID014?

No. The skill set includes everything in HLTAID014 plus advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy (HLTAID015) and managing first aid services and resources across a site (HLTAID016). It is designed for people who plan and coordinate first aid capability, not just respond on the day. It runs across 8.5 hours face-to-face plus up to 9 hours online, for $595 per person, compared with 6 hours face-to-face for HLTAID014 alone.

How often do I need to renew everything in this skill set?

The skill set is current for three years, but CPR (HLTAID009) and advanced resuscitation (HLTAID015) are recommended for annual refresh, in line with the Safe Work Australia Code of Practice. Those two can usually be booked together in a single session each year, so you are not repeating the full 8.5-hour skill set annually, just the faster-cycling components.
